Which YouTube links work with the thumbnail tool?

Use the correct input to avoid confusing video images with channel artwork.

Watch, share and Shorts links

The tool accepts youtube.com/watch?v= followed by an 11-character video ID, youtu.be share links, and YouTube Shorts, live and embed URLs. You can also enter the video ID directly.

Time and campaign parameters are not needed for thumbnails. A timestamp changes video playback, not the cover image. The resolver extracts the video ID and contacts a fixed image host.

Inputs that do not identify a video

Playlist links without a video ID, search pages and channel URLs do not identify a single video thumbnail. Use the channel picture or banner tool for channel URLs.

Private, deleted or restricted videos may not expose usable images. An unavailable result is not evidence that a video exists or that you have access to watch it.

Correcting an error

Open the intended video in YouTube, copy its share link and retry. Do not submit a shortened link from another service or an address that asks for an account password.
