YouTube thumbnail sizes: read the file, not the label
Understand why a thumbnail name does not guarantee a particular resolution.
The available variants
A video can expose default, medium, high, standard and maximum-resolution thumbnails. Not every video has every variant. Older uploads and some generated thumbnails offer fewer choices.
The tool requests the available files, checks their response status and measures the decoded image. It excludes missing maximum-resolution placeholders instead of presenting them as HD images.
Choosing a useful file
Start with the largest card that is actually available, then inspect the preview. A large pixel count cannot restore detail that was missing from the original artwork. For a small layout, a smaller file may load faster.
Compare the aspect ratio as well as width. Some thumbnail variants include padding, whereas others use a wide crop. Preserve the original proportions when placing the saved file in a design.
Practical check
Paste a video share URL, process it and compare the dimensions on the returned cards. Download one file and inspect its properties in your image viewer. The file dimensions should match its card.
